PAD will negotiate if PM resigns

(BangkokPost.com) - The anti-government People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) announced on Wednesday evening that the group will negotiate with the government only if Prime Minister and Defence Minister Somchai Wongsawat resigns.

The PAD's plan to lay siege to Government House, the acting government house at Don Mueang airport, and Suvarnabhumi airport was a correct decision, PAD leader Sondhi Limthongkul insisted.

He said there were proposals for the PAD demonstrators to disperse and for the group to enter talks with the government, but they would do so when Mr Somchai resigns from the premier's post. He said the core members will have to ask their followers whether or not they want to disband before making the decision.

He asked the protesters to be more patient, claiming that the prime minister will definitely step aside. He also told them to carry on demonstrating until the group's intention to bring about political reform is achieved.

Not any different than any other protest in that it *should* force the gummint to look at their failed policies. Think USA and Vietnam in 1968-71, for instance.

Seems quite democratic to me.

Cheers,

SD

And if an election is called and the people once again return this government and it's "failed" policies will the PAD offer it's congratulations and go home?

I think not. All they will settle for is the devaluation of the rural vote so that Thailand can be ruled by the people who run Bangkok.

An election would be a gamble for PPP. A lot of folks everywhere are starting to realise that it cares more about Mr T than the country. PPP would probably get back in, but with a reduced number of seats. Still, an election would put at least a temporary halt to the present mess. Also, it should be made clear that PAD must accept the result. Further protests would not be tolerated.
