Shakedown scams...a drastic measure

As stated elsewhere, Ekkamai shakedowns are sooooo common as to be expected almost. My theory used to be that it was due to the soapdodgers coming back from Koh Samet (though most of them do tend to get mini-buses back to their KSR burrows so that doesn't really help.)

This has happened to 2 of my friends and they look so respectable and straight it's hard to believe.

I know - fact - of a girl being set up by a 'friendly' bar owner down here subsequently being nicked at Ekkamai.

Get off at On Nut Tesco Lotus. Try not to arrive at Ekkamai too late.

Jools,

Just wondering, as I still use Morchit bus terminal fairly often. And I had this 'questioning and search' done to me years ago in Ekkami myself. Questioned twice, once searched. I've never had any problems with these cunts in Mor Chit though. Ekkami is used by those farangs frequenting Pattaya that want to save some money, the trip is pretty inexpensive to Pattaya. Much cheaper than a taxi or mini-van from BKK to Pattaya. I'm sure the dirty cops know this and also know many farangs are buying OTC viagra/cialis and such ED copy meds and likely are carrying it on them (why I don't know, as it is cheap enough to just buy it in Pattaya once you are there).

But the heart meds, high blood pressure meds, all that sort shouldn't be a problem. These dirty cops are just trying it on with any farang to see what they'll give for a bribe. 50,000 baht asked though is really taking the piss with this shit. Their greed is amazing, but, they must get a few who actually pay this amount or something close. DDDave, a member here who reported on this stuff, paid what, 10,000 baht when he had his shakedown encounter in Ekkami recently? Even that seems high for a bribe of this sort. I suspect this is a decent earner for the cops doing this and worth their while. Like I said though, this has been happening for years at Ekkami. I just hope it hasn't spread to Mor Chit as well.

If you hear from him again please do ask him which bus terminal and report his info back to us when you can. It would be good to know where exactly this happened. Thanks.

Carew,

"Try not to arrive at Ekkamai too late."

When the cops questioned and searched me at Ekkami a few years ago I was getting a bus to Patters. It was not even noon when this happened. So time might not be a factor here really.

Has anyone ever seen the cops in Ekkami doing this to Thais? I suspect it to be merely a farang scam.

The whole thing sounds ridicolous to me. You should learn the rules where you are at. If you are in the right, stand up to the bastards just do it friendly and with a smile. I do so in Indo. But if I am in the wrong, I pay and make my getaway!

BP meds are legal to carry everywhere. Tell the coppers you need a reciept for your fine or go to the cop house and talk to the big boss. It's a game of chicken buit if they know you are right they'll cave in and let you go

Your friend did not do the right thing.

I am a heart patient also and carried 6 months of meds into Thailand last week.

If ever cops or customs would run me into problems I would insist on going with them to the nearest hospital and file a complaint against the cops iof they would not back off.

Question for the local experts :

If it is real police up for a little scam and you refuse to pay , what would happen ? They take you to the police station and what happens then , wouldn't they cancel all operations if you refuse to pay and agree to be taken to the station ? Legally this would lead to nothing anyway because either your pills are backed by a home country prescription or not illegal anyway .
