If that's the case, I'm bailing out of cold hill and mountain country and moving to South Phuket or Ko Chang!

khunsanuk
Hi, 20K / month in Thailand? No way that I believe that. I think the 10K/month is even too high. Sanuk!
samak
the GDP per capita in Thailand is around 8000 usd, that's over 20k baht per month! and than there is a huge black economy in Thailand which is not counted in those official statistics
Faustian
Hi, the 20K is based upon government figures....so that's what I'm basing it on. Regardless my point still stands, 200K a month, is around 4K english pounds, or 48K a year. 48K a year is a really good wage in the UK.
Gadfly
even average careers in certain professions like banking, high end sales jobs, engineering, lawyers, corporate management, consulting, auditors etc. should bring you sooner or later above those figures!results are not surprising as a lot of expatriates are posted here or are offered highly paid job opportunities because of their expertise, special know how or management experience;... Agree. Think of it this way: why would a company pay these salaries if they could get someone local who will work for less? Actually, compared to compensation in NYC, London, Tokyo or virtually any other major metro area, these figures are not at all high. This is a very small faction of the salaries that were (and - this will surprise some here - still are) paid on Wall Street. But back to the point here: if you had two companies, say, Company A that used highly paid ex-pats (who cost more than their salaries indicate) while the Company B used locals earning much lower salaries (and many locals earn more than thes amounts), say, 50% less, Company A would quickly go out of business if the market valued their services equally. Company B could charge substantially less than Company A, and still make a hefty profit. But this doesn't happen. Why? Because the market doesn't value their services equally. Years ago, in an effort to encourage Thais to pay income taxes, the Revenue Department released a list of the top tax-payers. It was dominated by Farangs. Many very wealthy Thais were conspicuously absent. There are many more wealthy Thais in Thailand than upper middle class Farangs (and with these salaries, that is what we are essentially talking about). Of course, there is an even larger group of Thais who make substantially less either group.
