Bangkok, Jakarta, Manila - the list goes on. Unlike CA, where they had the political muscle to force Detroit to clean up vehicle emissions, Asian economies seem to have other priorities. Can only imagine how nasty life must be in downtown Cairo or Mexico City.

Hi,

"and I'm still alive"

Which most definitely beats the alternative! :)

Sanuk!

+1 - I cant imagine what it must be like to give up two vices cold turkey on the same day. My mother kicked alcohol at 40, but it took at least 5 years and an emphysema diagnosis to get her off the fags. DS is definitely one of the quiet achievers on this board.

Right, so after starting a thread that said 'Fuck Thailand - I've had enough !', the Thai legal system came to your aid (in record time) to achieve a settlement against a giant multinational that has no particular interest in humans, be they Thai or Farang ?

Feb 91 I made my base here and december 2012 I am going to fuck off,

too much shit here to make it fun anymore

Goodbye Thailand and godd fucking riddence/

Several posters, including one who hid behind the veil of a new identity, called you on some the claims in that post - my contention was simply that you seemed to be venting your anger on Thailand and the Thai people because of the actions of a single faceless corporation. Given that the'notorious' Thai legal system would seem to have saved you from sub-zero temperatures, I think the least you could do would be to update that thread with an apology to the Thai people.

Mekong, you clearly make a profound impression on the BMs who have actually met you, and you definitely have more supporters than detractors, but disparaging the country which has enriched your life for so many years just doesn't sit well with me. I know I'll get flamed for being a 'Thai apologist', but they seem to be a very easy whipping boy for every disgruntled Farang with internet access atm. If you want to bail on Thailand at some stage in the future, please put some thought into the way you phrase your opening post.

Mr gobbledonk, you clearly misread my frustrations at the time I made that post. It could have been fuck Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Korea or even Australia depending on where I was based at the time.

My main gripe is with BUPA, a multinational health care corporation who willing take your money then fight tooth and nail not to make genuine payments, I was feeling desperate at the time having the piss taken out of me by BUPA and faced with the sad prospect of returning to federal europe. In retrospect you are correct and I could have been more subtle in the thread title see even I can accept constructive criticism.

I for on have never criticised the Thai Justice System. as a plaintiff I have found the courts to be very honourable and open, where else in the world could one see the Judge outside of the case and he tells you "Mr M you will win just get me more evidence"

To be honest I am considering relocating from Thailand, just to another ASEAN County. the jumping though hoops here is wearing me down.

About 6 or 8 years ago, I met an American and his Filipeenie wife who were teachers in Gwangzou. I let them sit in on one of my speaking classes and had the students interview them. Afterwards, they said they envied me working there and commented on how "clean the air was in Bangkok". I thought ... clean air? But it seems in China the industrial areas are mixed right in with residential areas. The air in Gwangzou was black and everything covered with a sooty film. :p

Flasher, what do you think London looked like at the height of the British Empire ? Child labor (in England, outright slavery elsewhere), pestilence and disease : I guess coal dust must have seemed like a relatively small price to pay for 'progress'. I expect that cities like Youngstown, PA weren't exactly a postcard location right up to their demise as industrial centres - anyone driving through those towns thanked God they didn't have to live there. American industry may have been 'cleaner' (I said 'may'..), but how many long and expensive court cases were waged to make that happen ? I wasn't particularly enamoured of Shenzhen on the drive from the railway station to the airport. but you dont go straight from ricefields to wide suburban streets and stately homes.

Bill Bryson returned to the US in 1989 after years of life in England, determined to find the town that epitomised his ideal vision of 'small town America'. He found one - Savannah, GA. When I mentioned this to a work colleague who had lived and studied in the US for ten years, I was surprised when she pulled the race card, but those beautiful homes didn't build themselves. I dont know where the elite in Beijing and Shanghai find solace from the crazy cities around them, but I expect they need maids and gardeners, but they wont be sharing their Utopia with factory workers and noodle sellers. Or English teachers :neener:

The medical test is a new requirement in the last year - before I believe you needed one to apply the first time, but it could be done at a clinic and didn't really entail any real check.

A blood test and X-ray is the new requirement.

Thanks PM for confirming what I have been repeating until blue i the face for the past 6 months.

In the past WP medicals were a foregone conclusion where as now the examination has to done at a respectable hospital and the chest X-rays and blood tests are the most critical of the testing

I have asthma.

I noticed quite a while back that I generally have considerably LESS trouble in Bangkok than I do Stateside, even though I'm getting a LOT more exercise, and I'm outside walking around a LOT more.

I'm not so convinced about the supposed terrible air quality in Bangkok.

For comparison, I currently live in Huntsville, Alabama, USA. The local allergists and pulmonary specialists call this place "Death Valley East": it is very high on the list of WORST places in the US for asthmatics to live.

Isnt pollen count the key factor for asthmatics ? I know that's a long shot, but Spring seems to put a lot of people in Oz in a whole world of hurt. I'm lucky - I can bury my face in a Frangipani bloom and have zero ill effects, but I did develop a nasty little cough after 3 months living on Suk - make if that what you will.
