NPF Londoner Quiz 2005

Well, no Drogon but the regular 12 (with the exception of ItsMeDave) were in fine form.

Especially for IMD, your team scraped by and pinched the 2nd place money in the final round. Good job. The NPF2 team, missing only 1 question per round from the 1st place team, and ended up in 5th place.

We ate and drank and were basically "Men Behaving Badly", and spent all of our free vouchers.

Did you know that Oysters change their sex yearly? Neither did we.

I'm out of touch for the next 2 quizzes, so could use Khun Kong, Froggy, BKKGeorge, DocThai etc... to stop in and give one for the team.

Next quiz is on July 26th.

Cheers!

Yes he was there, and actually it wasn't that bad. The difference between first and fifth was only 8.5 points, or 1 question per round.

Don't say Cuba or Iceland to Goatscrot, and I'll remember that 'Le Boys' don't 'Twisting by the Pool' (same album?)

We would gladly take the 5 point deduction for you.

Cheers!

Of course it?s not the same when you?re not in the big chair and under pressure but here are most of the ones we missed, often, it must be said, with the correct answer as first guess or rejected at the last minute. PM has given some very hefty clues to a few already!

We?ll have to hum the music ones.

What was Dorothy?s surname in the ?Wizard Of Oz??

In which year did Kim Phlby admit to being the 3rd Man in the Burgess/McLean spy scandal?

Teddy Roosevelt lead the troops up San Juan Hill ? in which country?

Which creature changes its sex annually?

Who owns a London restaurant called ?Sticky Fingers?

What was the name of the sequel to ?Gentlemen Prefer Blondes??

How many incisors should an adult have?

What was the name of the British flagship during the Spanish Armada?

Which modern day country is Thrace now part of?

What is the name of the detective played by John Nettles in ?Midsommer Murders?

What is the legal age for entry to a beauty contest in Thailand?

What is myology the study of?

Who was the highest try scorer for the All Blacks in the recent series against the British Lions?

What is the correct architectural name given to a bell tower?

Who is the only Brit to win the World Matchplay golf title twice?

Berlioz, Wagner and Lizst all composed music about which character?

Off the coast of which country did Sertsey erupt in 1963?

What does the acronym LASER stand for?

Who was the youngest winner of the US Open in 1990?

What was the slogan for Live8?(!!)

A few answers and a few guesses:

Was Philby in 1962?

Roosevelt's charge (up Kettle Hill, actually) was in Cuba.

Bill Wyman owns "Sticky Fingers".

"Gentlemen Prefer Brunettes"?

Incisors: 6, I think

Thrace is in Turkey, I think.

Beauty contest: 15?

Is myology the study of spores (I'm thinking mytosis here)?

Bell tower: Campanile

Matchplay: Montgomerie?

Wagner, et al.: The Flying Dutchman?

Sertsey: Iceland

US Open (tennis, I assume): Pete Sampras

Live8: "You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll kiss 100 bucks goodbye!"

The British flagship and Dorothy's surname are going to bother me all night. I'm sure I'd be able to verify an answer from a teammate.

How did I do?

A few answers and a few guesses:

Was Philby in 1962?

[color:"blue"] Good for one point. 1963. We had 1965.

Roosevelt's charge (up Kettle Hill, actually) was in Cuba.

[color:"blue"] Yup. Embarassingly, we put Puerto Rico

Bill Wyman owns "Sticky Fingers".

[color:"blue"] Yup. We guessed Mick.

"Gentlemen Prefer Brunettes"?

[color:"blue"] Nope. "Gentlemen Marry Brunettes". We had "The 7 Year Itch"

Incisors: 6, I think

[color:"blue"] Nope. 8. We had 4, cuz we were thinking canines, due to the distracting Dracula picture Rodney used.

Thrace is in Turkey, I think.

[color:"blue"] Nope. Bulgaria. Although looking at Wikipedia, Turkey and Greece should have also been acceptable. We had Greece.

Beauty contest: 15?

[color:"blue"] Nope. We had that too, but a trick question. No age limit.

Is myology the study of spores (I'm thinking mytosis here)?

[color:"blue"] Muscles. We had that, then changed it to women.

Bell tower: Campanile

[color:"blue"] Yup. We just brain faded on that one. Ended up with Belfry, but knew it was wrong.

Matchplay: Montgomerie?

[color:"blue"] I forget.

Wagner, et al.: The Flying Dutchman?

[color:"blue"] Nope. Faustus. We had Beezlebub.

Sertsey: Iceland

[color:"blue"] Yup. We had Italy, cuz Goatscroat was sure it was not Iceland.

US Open (tennis, I assume): Pete Sampras

[color:"blue"] Yup. We had Agassi.

Live8: "You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll kiss 100 bucks goodbye!"

[color:"blue"] LOL, that's a better one, but the real answer is "Make Poverty History". We had "End Poverty Now".

The British flagship and Dorothy's surname are going to bother me all night. I'm sure I'd be able to verify an answer from a teammate.

[color:"blue"] The flagship was the Arc Royal. We had the Mary Rose. I forget Dorothy's name.

Hi SD,

"The flagship was the Arc Royal."

Ark Royal was the flagship of Lord Howard of Effingham who as Lord High Admiral had nominal command of the fleet. In charge of the operations was vice admiral Sir Francis Drake who had the Revenge.

Almost the same as say that FDR as supreme commander was leading the allied troops in Europe during WWII instead of Ike.

So a correcter answer is Revenge IMO.

Poor Judge,

Well, with your correct answers alone we could have won the quiz easily. Too bad that there isn't a "anything goes" quiz, sms, wireless, etc... Make the questions difficult, but let anything go. Just limit that no power cords or plug in internet. Gotta be wireless (and quiet)!

But then it would probably turn into a Google fest! Could be interesting.

Cheers!
