Explosions in Bangkok

How's this for a scenario, pure fantasy of course.

The Army blame Taksin supporters for the bombings. They declare him the head of a terrorist organisation and confiscate his wealth and that of his family so the terrorists can no longer be financed.

the world is full of islamic fanatic scumbags! All bars in walking street has been forced by the police to be closed for safety reasons since a bomb went of in Naklua!

What time did the police close the bars? I've read on a Pattaya board and no mentioning of closed bars or a bomb in Naklua, actually full activity until 2/3 hours after midnight.

Update: Checked an other Pattaya board where they report WS closed 02.30. Rumours about a bomb in BigC with 5 killed, an unexploded bomb found in the Dolphin and a car bomb outside Pattaya City Hall - all unconfirmed.

Police came in and said there was a bomb going off in Naklua but havent read anything yet and nothing on TV. Definately no bomb went off at Big C since I just came from there. If 5 people were killed it would beat the BKK news. Some boards are just silly and exagerating, shame on them trying to make news like that!

I think they started closing at 1am and 2 am everything was closed and some others openend again later I guess since it was heavily crowded when I drove back at 5am.

On german press they say it was most likely muslim radicals, I don't believe it was Thaksin supporters even when I could believe that the government is sending the the spin doctors to tell us this story to discredit him more! When the german press said in the past it was MOST LIKELY a particular group it turned out to be true since these papers doing their news based on informations, they wouldn't speculate, they would have just said that the terrorists are unknown!

I was a combat demolitions specialist (among other things) in the army and got to blow the hell out of some big things, including an abandoned company size fire base. Believe me, if I had the explosives I could make the bombs and have them planted at places like these in a matter of few days. This didn't require any months of planning.

To me it takes only a handful of willing guys, a few hand grenades (which were reportedly used in a few of the attacks), and then turn them lose, now adays, not even sure a small bomb requires much, as mos explosives come "pre rigged" and you just arm them...so that way even the dumbest of soldiers can use them. Remember "Claymor" mines? Had a warning and a picture (on the later models) instructing you which side faced the enemy...

Probably nothing in Pattaya at all as no reports in Bangkok Post and The Nation. There was a abandoned suitcase found in BigC Rajamri (BKK) but no bomb inside.

Two British men, three Hungarians, two Serbs and an American are receiving hospital treatment but none were thought to be in a serious condition, officials quoted by Reuters news agency said.

BBC

2 brits and 1 american is what to be expected as they're all over Thailand, but I'm really surprised that 3 hungarians and 2 serbs were injured. Probably all by the same bomb and that near Victory Monument I guess, but what were the hungarians and serbs doing there???

Firstly it needs to be said, Thailand is not such a nice place anymore. Its had insurgency growing out of its control in the south for the last few years, corruption is rampant, the police out of control, it recently deposed a tyrant of a PM and replaced him with a bunch of amateurs who are playing at being the goverment like 6th form society debators or accountants.

There is also a anti-foreigner mood around with Thai nationalism on the rise. The longer term future of Thai Institutions and the figure head is far from clear. Most of this goes on under the radar of most occaisional visitors to thailand as they rarely see or care about such matters, the bombs will scare them away for a while but the prospect of a major excercise in retribution is likely to do further damage. Thailand is changing and not for the better. -- JP

That is the best, strategic briefing I have seen, on the Thailand situation.

Thank you, Bkkbound04, for thinking and posting as you did.
