On my recent trip to Malaysia, I had a truly bizarre interlude - met a Malaysian guy and his cousin, they invite me back to their house and, although wary, I think 'fuck it, I'll never know if I dont go'. I get to the house - nothing special, terrace style about 20 min from the centre of KL. Go inside, meet his brother, who tells me he is a blackjack dealer at a casino. Ushers me into a room with a card table where he begins showing me how he can 'control' any deck of cards, no matter how I shuffle it/cut it etc. All very impressive stuff, but alarm bells are ringing - what is the dumb Bule doing out here and why are you showing me this ? He goes on to say that he only deals in the VIP room, where high rollers take one another on purely for the thrill of it. Rich Arabs, apparently, one acting as the bank and the other his 'competition' - our dealer merely flips the card. His point is that, although they change dealers every 30 minutes, he can completely screw the banker over if he decides to hand the player the cards he needs (to beat the banker - the casino makes money from both parties, but loses nothing from the blackjack game, apparently). Right throughout this performance, I am repeating 'I never gamble, so this isnt really my thing' (absolutely true). Long story short, they abruptly lose interest in their new 'friend' and I am driven back to my hotel. The one thing the brother did say which I am inclined to believe is that the high rollers can lose 2 million USD in a single night and barely blink. Winning is their drug, and it eclipses anything they have in a garage, hangar or block of real estate. The dealers know this (duh..) and they will feed them enough of the drug to keep them on the hook - you dont have to grow up in Vegas to know that makes sense. My point, at long last, is that we all have our addictions - the dollar amount is rarely the issue. For a holiday, pick an amount then double it - anything less than the new figure will seem like a win. For my 6 months in LOS, my strategy is a variation on the one I used in Malaysia - company and beer one night followed by no company and sobriety the next : extend that to 2-3 days on and 4-5 days 'off' and I suspect that most of us can maintain an overall budget. I have gone to Patters for more than 25 years. I have been on lower budgets than that, and higher too. I have always had fun. It's not about how much money you have but who you are. For the money you are mentioning you can have great fun in Patters. Just don't listen to the wankers that are talking about silly money. Gogo areas. 3100-4100 including barfine. More if 3 girls. Drink - cut right down. A few drinks a night, not even alcohol this week. Before I guess about 5-6 drinks to find a barfine. Now around 800B? If I spend less on drinks, I spend more on more girls. Food and coffee - 500/600 a day? Gym 4 days a week. 150B a day average? Travel - 100B? So about the same as Munchie. Yes it is if you compare to what an average Thai family spends per month to eat but so are 3K bht/day spent by people spending less and having fun. But this is no more "silly money" than someone who saves to buy "the car of his dream" or whatever else. In the end, it all comes down to where you go and what you are ready to pay to get what you want. If as a sex tourist you want a very beautiful white skinned university TG who is really studying engineering or accountancy -> No you will not find her in a gogo or beer bar and it will cost a bit more than 1K ST... I want a 9-10 (beauty scale) lady, who provides a great gfe, whom I can take without risks to the places I usually go, who dress like if she is going to a nice club, who knows that Nietzsche is not the latest gogo bar in town, who provides great sex, who will not do a runner -> yes I am willing to pay more than 2K LT and to renew my membership in a few clubs. During a 15 days stay in bkk: - Hotel: 3-5K/day - Food: 300 bht - 4K depending on what I want to eat - Taxi - mototaxi: 200 - 1K: Depends on where I go and how many places I visit - During the stay: Renew 2-3 clubs memberships: 60-100K - Ladies fees: vary a lot, one lady? 2 ladies? Do you also have to pay the barfine? - Air ticket to Khon Kaen and Koh Chang: 10K, more if I take some company - Hotels in KK and KC: 3-5K/day This is how you end up spending on average 20-30K and I am not buying big memberships, not renting a Porsche during my stay or staying in an expensive suite at 15K/day. So I do not consider myself a wanker. Silly money? This is what I spend back here to barely survive, almost not going out. Food: 1K-5K/day especially if I want a decent meal Transportation: 2K-4K depending on where my job takes me Rent: 5OK/month Having a few beers with colleagues: Anywhere between 5K-15K every time etc...
