So not only has NZ sold exactly the same cars, but they's quarantined them, to stop the dodgy software getting out and infecting other cars/people/native wild life

Volkswagen's New Zealand division has quarantined 36 new vehicles with emissions-cheating diesel engines, but acknowledges there are likely to be hundreds more on our roads.

 

General manager Tom Ruddenklau says the company has halted the sale of 21 Tiguan SUVs and 15 Caddy vans, and is confident they are the only new VW vehicles in this country to have been caught up in the global scandal engulfing the German car-maker.

 

"Just to be on the safe side, we've isolated those from being sold until we've got a remedy - it's just something that's the responsible thing to do," he said this afternoon.

 

But he disclosed that there are likely to be hundreds of VW diesels of both those models and some others sold over several years in New Zealand fitted with the same four-cylinder EA 189 engine, although he was unable to identify those at this stage.

 

Smaller numbers of Audi and Skoda vehicles with the same engines were also likely to be affected.

 

Mr Ruddenklau said he hoped to have a definitive list from Germany by Monday night or Tuesday morning of the other models, to be able to notify owners and offer them a fix when one became available.

 

The company also intended setting up a website during the week on which owners could enter their vehicle chassis numbers, rather than wait for the company to reach them.

 

"Because what we are finding is customers with petrol engines for example are calling us and asking is their vehicle involved in this - and we are going: No, it's only diesel."

 

Neither were VW Tourags with their V6 diesel engines affected.

 

When the scandal first blew up, Mr Ruddenklau said New Zealand was not directly affected, as VWs on our roads were imported from the European Union market "and those cars are not involved in this emission-associated recall programme..."

 

His comment followed the United States Environmental Protection Agency's revelation on September 21 that it had found "defeat device" software on diesel cars which could suppress nitrogen oxide emission levels during tests, only for those to soar by up to 40 times the permitted level in everyday use.

 

Mr Ruddenklau told the Herald today he initially thought the problem was confined to the US market "but then the next day it transpired it was probably a little bit bigger than that."

 

He noted that New Zealand did not require emissions tests for nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, and did not have a standard for those.

 

"But emissions are emissions, and even if we don't test for them here, they are important and we can't be irresponsible or complacent over it." he said.

 

"At the centre of this is a bit of a trust issue - there's been some dishonest behaviour from VW in Germany and that behaviour is not acceptable."

 

A statistic analysis by the Associated Press news agency estimates that VW's pollution-control chicanery has not just been victimless tinkering, but is likely to be killing between five and 20 people a year in the United States, from excessive emissions of smog-forming nitrogen oxides.

A top Volkswagen executive on Thursday blamed a handful of rogue software engineers for the company’s emissions cheating scandal and told outraged lawmakers that it would take years to fix all of the nearly 500,000 vehicles affected in the U.S.

 

“This was a couple of software engineers who put this in for whatever reason,†Michael Horn, VW’s U.S. chief, told a House subcommittee hearing. “To my understanding this was not a corporate decision. This was something individuals did.â€

Take years are they taking the piss now or what?

 

There are approx 650 VAG dealerships in the USA, which would require each on to look at 770 vehicles each to fix all 500,000.

 

If only 2 vehicles per day it would only take 13 months to fix but the fix wouldn't take that long since it would only require re-flash the Engine Management EEPROM which would take an additional 15 minutes during routine maintenance. I expect a fair proportion on said vehicles to be less than 3 years old and have regular dealership maintenance to keep the warranty valid, it would be the older high milage vehicles that maybe a problem.

 

Simple offer every VAG vehicle a free service until this is resolved.

It would have been a much better move by VW to sacrifice their US-guy and probably decapitate him in public even if he was as innocent on all accounts as boardmember BuBi . Although when some idiot asked him what he was going to read in prison he maybe should have suggested the book about " Air pollution in Irak after the US attack " .

You surprise me referring to Software Engineers as IT guys, whilst a Software Engineer could be involved in IT a pure IT guy could not claim to be a Software Engineer.

 

Within computing there are 3 distinct levels namely

 

Computer Science

 

Computer Scientist understand the "why" behind computer programs using algorithms and complex mathematical models computer scientists invent new ways to manipulate and transfer information. This category can then be further sub divided into 3 distinct fields.

 

Applications Software Developers who design and build programs and applications for computers and other technological devices, could be anything from MS Office to angry birds through to specialist control applications for Industry and travel (such as VAG Applications Software Developers) to name just a couple.

 

Systems Engineers, as the name suggests UNIX, Windows, IOS, OSX, Android etc the operating platform on which the applications run.

 

Web Developers, Self Explanatory.

 

Computer Engineering

 

All the hardware, most people only see hardware as a PC, Laptop, Tablet or Smart Phone, but there are thousands of Hardware devices again in Industry, Travel and so on

 

Information Technology

 

IT professionals are users of technology, they don't Develop the Software, they don't Engineer the Hardware but they make a fully integrated system work from a simple office network (why won't this thing print, call the IT Guys) to full blown systems administrators and/or Project Management on multi billion $ projects.

 

 

From the above it can be seen that a Computer Scientist or a Computer Engineer can work in Information Technology but not the other way around.
