Sad thing is BT is that I don't think we'll get to that point where we 'really, really' realize. When that finally happens it will be too late.

The pols know it as well. They wouldn't have tried and put pork on the stimulus bill if they had any fear we were fed up.

Wall Street and corporate CEOs know it as well. They see all bailout as free money and think they are more important than the average citizen because 'they are too big to let fail'.

The American people more or less are apathetic. Individually I think most people feel they are powerless and the powers that be are untouchable. This election there were some realizations on a grass roots leve. Ron Paul is the best example. Obama had it when he was considered an outsider, now I think most would see him as an insider. His fans see him as a responsible insider but my guess is an insider at the end of the day.

The nomination process is set up where you have to be part of either party and the party bosses can cut you off at the knees. Then the process itself where if you jaywalked or downloaded online porn you are not presidential material.

Then there's the hardcore GOPers. Just how disgraceful is this? From the very right-wing NY Post...

The mayor of Los Alamitos is coming under fire for an e-mail he sent out that depicts the White House lawn planted with watermelons, under the title "No Easter egg hunt this year."

Local businesswoman and city volunteer Keyanus Price, who is black, said Tuesday she received the e-mail from Mayor Dean Grose's personal account on Sunday and wants a public apology.

"I have had plenty of my share of chicken and watermelon and all those kinds of jokes," Price told The Associated Press. "I honestly don't even understand where he was coming from, sending this to me. As a black person receiving something like this from the city-freakin'-mayor - come on."

The Orange County Register first reported the e-mail on its Web site Tuesday night.

Grose confirmed to the AP that he sent the e-mail to Price and said he didn't mean to offend her. He said he was unaware of the racial stereotype that black people like watermelons.

He said he and Price are friends and serve together on a community youth board.

"Bottom line is, we laugh at things and I didn't see this in the same light that she did," Grose told the AP. "I'm sorry. It wasn't sent to offend her personally - or anyone - from the standpoint of the African-American race."

Grose, who became mayor in December, said he sent an apology e-mail to Price and her boss and also left her a voicemail apology.

Regardless, Price said it will be difficult for the two to work together.

"Now I am like - wow, is this really how he feels?" Price said.

Los Alamitos is a 2¼-square-mile Orange County city of around 12,000 people. The mayor is elected by fellow members of the five-seat City Council.

Not a personal fan of watermelon myself. I'll try it if its around but I won't go looking for it. Our family didn't buy much of it if at all that I can remember. More of an Orange, plums, grapes and Mango guy.

The current situation is so huge and unprecedented in modern times in the U.S. that I really think that NO ONE really knows how to resolve this.

I have not heard economists talk with one voice on what to do.

What is the Republican solution? Do they have one? I'm not saying the Democrat solution is going to work either.

Point is that NO ONE really knows. We're in unchartered territory.

Each candidate had a plan and a vision that did not include the economic crisis.

Obama is winging it just as McCain would have based on their ideology.

I think Mr. Steve has it here.

As I have stated in other posts, view Frontline - Inside the Meltdown.

Rhetorically, should they have let the banks fail?

Well, the Bush appointees decided no. Potential worldwide banking collapse.

The first bailout was under Bush. For those naysayers above. So . . . both Bush AND Obama are wrong?

Yes, Mr. Steve summed it up quite nicely.

We are in unchartered waters. And the Captain of the US ship seems like he has his hands on the rudder or is it the steering wheel? Any boatswains out there?

No, apparently only Bush was wrong and Obama is right when it comes to the bailouts. Duh. It would be interesting to search through old posts and see how many opposed the initial bailouts as a waste and see what their opinions are now. But I'll leave that to somebody who wants to waste time.

With regards to Bush, at the time, I was loathe to trust the solution of the administration that I think had a huge hand in the problem in the first place (either by commission or ommission).

The original bailout number that was asked of congress was taken out of thin air. We didn't get any supporting numbers or documentation for the figure requested.

What made me dismiss it completely was that the original request had language that essentially said they can spend it however they want WITHOUT any legal ramifications.

It was an arrogant, illegal first draft. What little trust or faith I had was gone.

I've voted Republican on occasion in the past either on a local or state level, congressional and even presidential depending on the person. However, the actions of the past 8 years has totally turned me off from the GOP, especially on the presidential and congressional level. I may be willing to vote for a cog catcher but that's it. It will take not only a good candiate but a changed party for me. There are some good Republicans but they are tainted by the party and right now the party is as bad as I've ever seen.
