'Full-on crazy': Nobel-winning economist aghast at Trump's tariffs and wildly false claims

Nobel Prize-winning economist turned political commentator Paul Krugman was completely aghast at President Donald Trump's new round of so-called "Liberation Day" tariffs, which impose new import taxes ranging from 10 to 49 percent on essentially every country's imports — and even a handful of random, remote islands with tiny populations and negligible trade with the United States.

"Based on what he said, he’s gone full-on crazy," wrote Krugman...   LINK

Less than 6 hours into the tariffs and world markets are in a tumble and US stock futures are falling and the U.S. $ is on a slide…still, the maggots at work and elsewhere are still saying “…well what about Hillary..?” And “…Hunter’s laptop…” and insisting we just give it a year or 2…I say time for a change…just hoping years of fast food catch up soon…

On a brighter note, People have intercepted JD Vance’s emails where he openly criticizes the dump so maybe he will have high aspirations and will drive the dump passed the grassy knoll in Dallas soon…

Gentlemen, the next couple of months should be most entertaining although the US people might not find it like that: unevitably President Duck´s tariffs shall lead into major price increases whereever you look. On some daily necessities they should be heavy and add to an already high level. The entertaining aspect would now be how the President manages to put the blame an anything else, probably Obama or Hillary or the deep state. I am looking forward to a stream of polls showing loss of admiration for the Yellow Donald, even anger maybe.

When   asked Nobel laureate Paul Krugman for his reaction to Trump’s remarks, the economist replied:

Trump’s tariff announcement was full-on crazy. Not only is he imposing higher tariffs than almost anyone expected, but he’s justifying them with completely false claims about other countries’ tariffs. I don’t know where his numbers are coming from, but they have nothing to do with reality. ... It’s a really bad day for the U.S. economy.

At face value, the fact that Trump lied a lot probably seems unremarkable. This is, after all, what he does, and what he’s always done throughout his time in public life. Those who look to this president for honesty and facts clearly haven’t been paying close enough attention.

But if Trump is going to set the global economy — and your retirement savings — on fire, it’s hardly unreasonable to think he should present his vision in a way that had a tangential relationship with reality.

He did not.

Whilst no economist myself, it is pretty clear where Trump has fucked up his calculations, he is basing Tariffs on trade deficit., the n dividing deficit by US Exports and splitting the difference
it is Trade deficit / imports is what the US says the other country charges as a tariff.

eg China

US exports $145b and imports $440b , so deficit is $295b

295 / 440 =0.67 or 67% split the difference by halving it 33.5 and rounding up 34 and the tariff imposed on China is 34%

Likewise EU, $370.2B Exports Imports $605.8b, deficit $235.6b  235.6 / 605.8 =0.389 or 39% divided by two and rounded up gives 20% which is the tariff imposed on EU.

I used to think that Trump wasn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer, but hit proves that he is a complete imbecile

Norfolk Island has been hit with a significantly higher 29 per cent rate as opposed to the penguins. Justified as it has a population of 2000 and exports zero to the US.

As was said a complete imbecile.
