shygye
6 Foot, 147 Pounds, I drink at least 10 pints a day plus spirits, and I eat like a horse, for some reason I cannot put any weight on and I am trying to. I don't know which is more difficult, loosing weight or trying to gain it, but hey I have more fun trying to gain it In a few years you won't have problems becoming a fat bastard. unit731
May the Good Lord Bless you in this effort! If you are young enough and healthy enough to walk, then this is one good way. I waited too long and now have a bad knee that will need medical work. I was much thinner when I walked every day. And if you are able, carry a knapsack/backpack with some weights in it. Yes, a Fitness Center is also good. I have been to some, but I hated looking at people who are perfectly fit - working out. Genes play a part here. More difficult if fat is in family. When I went in military, I weighed 83 kg and when discharge (honorable, by the way) 78 kg. Today, well, it is much more than above. Closer to 115. All above is true and good. Cut carbs. Cut sugars. Cut beer. Cut sex. Well, let's not go overboard. A visit with a good dietician might help. I have free access to a dietician. And that is what they tell me. As many have stated to me. It's not a diet, it's a lifestyle change. Like Nancy Reagan once said: "Just say no". A thin friend once stated to me, just consume fruits and vegitables. Easier said than done. Or as Rush Limbaugh (radio person) who was overweight. He went out and hired a personal chef to make all his meals and snakes. It did work. He did lose weight. But how in God's name can one find a good Thai gal who is both a dietician and a good cook? It's an enigma wrapped in a riddle!
rogueyam
To reduce the amount of fat stored on your body you must expend more calories through your activities than you ingest in your eating and drinking. There is no exception to this principle. I know how many calories I expend and I count the number of calories I ingest in order to keep within my budget of output minus 1000 cal/day. (One pound of body fat is 3500 cal. so a 500 cal. per day deficit will result in the loss of one pound per week.) To determine one's calorie budget, use a calorie calculator such as this one: http://www.stevenscreek.com/goodies/calories.shtml This website will tell you the calorie content of pretty much any food: http://www.thecaloriecounter.com/ The whole system is: 1. Have a calorie budget and keep to it. Know how much you weigh and how much you intend to lose THIS week. If you are not losing weight at a specific rate right now then you are not losing weight. 2. Increase your lean muscle mass through strength training. A modest effort, even one good strength training session every other week, pays HUGE benefits. 3. Regular. Aerobic. Exercise. Every day. This is critical. A ten minute walk around your neighborhood once or twice a day is enough. Don't think that doing something very strenuous once a week is equivalent. It isn't. Build up your muscle mass and then use it CONSTANTLY. Frequency simply cannot be overemphasized. 4. Eat five or six times a day. Get 40% of your calories from protein and no more than 20% from fat. Reduce sugar (all kinds), fat, refined grains. Eat whole grains, fruit (not juice), vegetables, lean meat. Get flavor from garlic, onions, herbs, peppers and other spices; not from fat, sugar and salt. Drink lots of water. Reduce or eliminate alcohol. There are a lot of details but the basics are very simple. Increase caloric output by building up muscle and moving frequently. Reduce caloric input by eating less food and leaner foods. Avoid hunger by eating frequently and avoiding foods like sugar and refined flour that don't last in your system. That's the whole thing.
CTO
So lots of lean meat right?
SatRai
It all has to do with the GENES!! I am 5'9", weighing 72 kg. I work-out three times a week and I eat what I want (chips and other crap). But here it comes: when I stop working out - which I did a few times in the past - my weight stays at about 72 kg, I just do not gain weight! shygye
How old are you? I could eat anything and hit buffets hard, and not gain any weight. Then I hit 40 and now weight goes up so easily.
Mekong
....' date=' I drink at least 10 pints a day plus spirits,....[/quote']That's a lot of alcohol. Have you ever had your liver checked? Medical every year, as you are probably aware Liver Funtion Test was / is a pre-requisite for getting a work permit in Saudi (in he bad old days when I worked there)
rogueyam
Yes, lots of lean meat. 40% of 3000 cal. per day is 1200 cal. of protein, minimum. Protein is 9 cal. per gram so that's at least 133 g. protein per day. The above calorie counter link (the second one) gives the macronutrient content for various foods. You will see that it takes several substantial portions of meat to total 133 grams or more for the day. In fact, I have taken to making shakes with protein powder (mostly whey protein but also some protein powder blends that include egg and soy protein) mixed with nonfat milk, water and instant oatmeal. These are more delicious and fun to eat than you might think and are an ideal food supplement - high protein, moderate complex carbs, very low simple carbs, almost no fat. Bon appetit!
